JD Miller’s paintings are created in an original technique he refers to as
“oil sculpting”. The foundation is painted using traditional oil painting methods. Then the
sculptural sections of each work are created using palette knives and are formed with pure
archival quality oil paint.
Once complete, the oil forms a thin “skin” to which a layer of alkyd
glaze is applied forming a special coating that protects the paint while giving the sculpted areas
the appearance of hand-blown glass.
After a period of six to twelve months a tough outer layer
forms that is extremely durable. The interiors of the heavily sculpted sections dry infinitesimally
slowly thereafter becoming fully dry after an estimated 50-100 years or more.
